Leaving Mary's House
Donations from Sydney North Random Acts of Kindness, Mummies Paying it Forward and St Vincent de Paul help the women get established after leaving Mary’s House.
We often get asked ‘What happens to the women when they leave Mary’s House?’
Our answers vary depending on a woman’s circumstances.
One moved in with her mother, another was able to move back home. And another, perhaps the most frequent occurrence, is to move to transitional housing.
The women often have very few possessions when they seek refuge at Mary’s House. Sometimes they only have the clothes on their backs. St Vincent de Paul Society Our Lady of the Way Conference helps with clothing and gift cards so our residents can buy what they most need.
We have established Sydney networks that work with us to achieve the best outcomes for the woman and her children.
When a woman transitions out of Mary’s House, she may need to be set up in a rented apartment. In early 2017 Vinnies provided much of the furniture and many white goods so “Susie” (not her real name) was able to start setting up her new life with her young child.
Sydney North Random Acts of Kindness also sent this car full of essentials so Susie can make a cup of tea or reheat dinner for her little one.
And Mummies Paying It Forward delivered some homewares and gifts for the little one’s birthday just after Susie moved out.
Mary’s House is about helping women help themselves, and we are grateful to our partners who help the residents during the often challenging transitional phase.
It’s our intention to keep caring and supporting the Mary’s House residents for a year after transition.
